Welcome back! I hope that you and your families all enjoyed a lovely summer break and that the children are looking forward to an exciting year in their new class.
As many of you will be aware, there have been some changes made to the National Curriculum but we are pleased to assure you that the Year 4 curriculum is broad and balanced; practical experience and creativity will be at the heart of the learning journey with plenty of scope for investigations, group work and independent research as well.
Our topic this term will be ‘Que Pasa?’ which will see us going on a virtual journey to the Americas to explore the Geography, History and Culture of Mexico and the ancient civilisations of South America. Other foci across the curriculum will include examining the properties of solids, liquids and gases in Science; ‘Accuracy Counts’ in ICT which will focus on accuracy in entering data and identifying effective criteria to produce relevant results from search engines; making money holders in D.T. and in Art we will learn about the work produced by the Mayan civilisation; this South American theme will culminate in a trip to Chiquito’s to sample some Mexican delicacies. In R.E. our focus will be on Hinduism and Christianity; the children will have the opportunity to research key beliefs and explore related artefacts. French will be on Tuesdays and will be taught by Mrs Wilbraham. Spellings are set on a Monday and tested on a Friday.
We will have PE lessons on a Tuesday and in the Autumn term the children will also have swimming lessons on a Wednesday afternoon, these will run from 10th September to 19th November inclusive. The approximate cost per child will be £16.00, a further letter will be sent out in due course. Children will be required to bring a swimming kit and towel.
As the children are now in the juniors, it is important that they become responsible for remembering to bring their homework on the correct day! The ‘Learning Log’ tasks will be given out on a Friday and will be due in the following Wednesday. There will be a compulsory Maths activity which should be completed together with a chosen task. In addition to this, your child will be issued with a diary in which they will be able to record their spellings.
The school provides writing pens; however, should your child wish to bring their own, please ensure it is a fountain pen with blue ink.
There are plenty of opportunities for parental support within the classroom in Year 4 and I will post these via the website. The children will need testing on their tables and any parental help would be greatly appreciated. Ideally this would take place first thing (between 9am and 10am) but I do appreciate that people are busy and will be grateful for any offer of assistance.
