Summer term 2013

15th April 2013

Dear Parents/ Carers,

We hope you have had a relaxing and enjoyable Easter break. This term Year 1 will be covering a wide range of new and interesting topics.

This term in Science we will be focusing on growing plants. We will be looking at different plants within the local environment, naming the main parts and recording careful observations of our own planted seedlings. In Art we will be exploring the exciting symbols and stories of Aboriginal art and in Geography we will be thinking about how we can make our local area safer, which will include carrying out a small scale investigation about parking.

During our Literacy lessons this term we will be reading non fiction texts and writing our own information books. In addition to Literacy lessons all children in Key Stage 1 will continue to participate in daily ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ Lessons. This continues to enhance the children’s knowledge and understanding of phonics, enabling them to rapidly progress with their reading and writing. In Maths during the first half term we will be focussing on number recognition, addition and subtraction facts and we will also be looking at problem solving, sorting and capacity. In order for you to be able to support your child at home we will continue to send home maths challenge cards.

Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and Friday, each child will take two reading books home, accompanied by their reading record in which you write the title of the book if they have completed and any comments. If you require additional reading books please feel free to come and ask. In addition to the reading scheme books your child will have a library book which they will change with parent helpers on a weekly basis. Your child will be heard reading by the teacher/teaching assistant at least once a week either individually or within a guided reading session, and in addition to this we aim for all children to read individually with a parent helper.

Please ensure your child brings their book bag into school everyday. P.E. lessons will take place on a Wednesday and Friday, however, it is advisable to retain kits in school at all times in case of non timetabled sessions. Show and tell will take place on a daily basis, giving each group a chance to shre something interesting with all of us.

To enhance and enrich the curriculum we will be arranging a school outing this term and will let you know more about it as soon as the details are finalised.

Parents are always welcome to come and help with reading and Maths cards, if you are able to help please come and discuss days and times with us.

We are hoping to have a very happy and productive summer term! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

Yours sincerely,
Carolyn Field (Year 1 Class Teacher) & Jane Fox (Year 1 Teaching Assistant)
