Skyswood lift the St Albans City Cup!

Congratulations to our school football team on the fantastic achievement of winning the St Albans City Cup. Our team performed superbly in their semi-final against Bernard’s Heath on Thursday 2nd May. An enthralling semi-final went to extra-time, with Oli striking a superb goal with just a couple of minutes left on the clock. The team then went through to play Killigrew in the final. Killigrew have been crowned this season’s County Champions, and had previously knocked out national semi-finalists Garden Fields en-route to the final, so the team knew they were in for a real challenge. Two goals from Calum earned Skyswood a well deserved victory, with every player having to be at the top of their game in order to compete against the strongest of opponents. Nico was incredible at the back and Josh was superb in the Skyswood goal, not conceding in either the semi or the final. Charlie enjoyed his best ever performances for these crucial matches, playing with tremendous heart and intelligence. Rory and Ky were simply outstanding in midfield, Oli and Alby were possibly our most versatile of players, covering several different positions over the course of the game and Calum, as he proved in the final, was a constant threat up front. A mention must also be given to Matthew, who was injured and unable to play in the final. Matthew has been a key member of our football team over the past few years and, although unable to play on this occasion, was there to cheer his team mates on and this gave all of the team a real boost.

The team had one of the toughest routes to the final, knocking out Wheatfields in an earlier round and coming up against two top teams in the semi and final. Skyswood have been in the final before, but never previously have they won the St Albans City Cup, which is the main trophy that St Albans primary schools compete for over the course of the season. Well done to the team, not only did you win, but you won in style!
