Learning our times tables and number bonds supports us with so many aspects of mathematics. An instant or quick recall of tables gives us access to a wider range of strategies to support mental calculation.
As you know, Skyswood Primary School subscribe to Number Gym. The resources on Number Gym are fabulous and go far beyond just supporting the learning of basic number bonds and tables. Our suggestion is always ‘little and often’ when it comes to learning your tables. Ten minutes a day on Number Gym would be a great thing to do during this period of learning from home.
Every child has a personal log in, and should know the school username and password. As part of our contractual agreement I obviously can’t put the school password and username on our website as school websites are accessible to the general public. We will send out a Parent Mai on Thursday to remind children of the school username/password, and remind them of the ‘formula’ for their personal log in.
Explore the whole Number Gym site if you haven’t already.
Here are a few of my suggestions for the week.
- Have a go at the Mosaic Triangles programme in Maths Art, it’s quite addictive!
- The Guess my Number challenge is great for estimating along a number line. If you don’t get it spot on first time, it shows you the position of your guess in relation to the target. See if you can hit the targets within two or three guesses!
- Place Value Challenge tests your ability to get to a target number in as few steps as possible. The aim is to hit your target within six steps.
- Mental Maths Challenge includes lots of challenges for doubling or halving numbers, along with a Bonds to 1000 number challenge and a challenge to work out change (in 5p denominations)
TEN MINUTES OF TABLE TRAINER OR THE MENTAL MATHS CHALLENGES EACH DAY WILL REALLY HELP YOU TO IMPROVE YOUR NUMBER BONDS AND MENTAL CALCULATION STRATEGIES!
