Double Champions!

Congratulations to the Skyswood football team on their amazing success this season. After winning the league title following a 3-0 victory in their final league match, the team automatically entered the Inter-League Play Offs. This competition is contested between the league winners in the six St Albans Primary Football Leagues, and is a competition that the school have never previously succeeded in winning, despite being league champions in three of the last five seasons! The team started out with a convincing 4-0 victory against Fleetville ‘B’, before drawing 1-1 with Mount Pleasant Lane, despite dominating much of the game. The superior goal difference put Skyswood through to the final against Wheatfields, who had defeated Park Street and St Peters in their group matches. The whole team played superbly and thoroughly deserved their 2-0 victory, with both goals scored by Daniel (who had shaken off a previous injury to spearhead our attack in the final!) Aaron and Louis were both outstanding in defence, winning virtually every ball in the air and being alert to every possible interception and tackle. Jack captained the side with fantastic drive and leadership (as he has done all season), and was ably supported by George and Adam. George was his usual tenacious self in midfield, with great distribution and energy to support both attack and defence. Adam was magnificent, showing great skill, strength and confidence throughout the three matches! Max was as reliable as ever in the Skyswood goal, beaten only once by a wicked deflection in an hour of competition against three schools who had all convincingly triumphed in their respective leagues. We are incredibly proud of this year’s team and our double triumph, following their six-a-side triumph in last season’s Year 5 6-a-side tournament makes this team the most successful in the school’s 55 year history! They could add further success when playing in the Year 6 6-a-side tournament and in the semi-finals of the St Albans City Cup (at Clarence Park on Thursday 7th May.)
