Welcome to the Spring Term in Year One

6th January 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to a new term in Year One!
We hope that you have all had a very good Christmas and new year break. We are very happy to see everyone back at school and are looking forward to the term ahead.
We would like to welcome Miss Lewis, a student teacher, for the first half term. The children will already know her well as she spent a few weeks with us before Christmas.
In English, we will be starting with Instructions followed by a narrative called ‘Stanley’s Stick’ which will help the children to re-tell a story. This will be followed by a Recount Unit and Poetry.
As per last term, we will continue to change the children’s reading books on a Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that you sign their orange reading records when you read with your child. We would also encourage the children to take part in the whole school 50 Night Read initiative. If you have any questions, please do feel free to email me for further explanation.
Every Friday we will continue to test spellings which will be supported throughout the week during our daily Read, Write, Inc. sessions.
During Maths we will first be learning about Place Value within 20, then Addition and Subtraction within 20, followed by Place Value within 50 and finally Length and Height and Mass and Volume.
Please continue to practise Maths cards with your child. We will endeavour, through the use of our fantastic parent volunteers, to ‘test’ your child as often as possible. Please do let us know though if your child is finding a card particularly easy so we can move them on but also if your child is struggling with a specific challenge as we can support them with some additional support at school too! Please do encourage your child to use either Numbots or Times Tables Rock Stars as this will also support their Maths although unlike further up the school we will not be setting tasks.
This term in Science the children will be learning about Everyday Materials. The children will be learning to identify different materials and their properties.
In Geography, we will be looking at Hot and Cold places around the world and discussing where you might find them in the world.
In History, we will be completing a topic around St. Alban. This will culminate in a visit to St. Albans cathedral completing the St. Alban trail on the 18th of March. We will give further details nearer the time.
In Computing, we will be starting with ‘Moving a Robot’ and then moving onto ‘Grouping Data in the second half of the term. We will be making sandwiches in Design and Technology this term and in Art we will be mark making using a variety of materials and skills. In RE, we will be considering two questions: 'Why are home and family important to people?’ and ‘Why should we care for the World?’ In PSHE we will be learning about ‘Dreams and Goals’ and then focusing on ‘Healthy Me’.
PE this term will continue to take place on a Tuesday and a Thursday. However, please ensure your child has a PE kit in school every day, including suitable PE footwear/trainers.
We look forward to another positive term together!
Kind regards,
Miss Harvey and Mrs Reynolds
