Year 6 Spring Term Overview

Dear Parents / Carers,

We hope you have had a relaxing and festive Christmas and are looking forward to the term ahead. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the generous gifts that you gave me before the holidays!  The term ahead will be a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable one for all of us in Year 6. I have attached a brief summary of the topics we will be covering over the coming weeks.

As a part of our work in Literacy, we are going to create an Interactive Reading Display where children will have the opportunity to recommend books to each other. The children will be required to create a front cover for the book, along with a short fact file on the plot and recommended audience/age range. They will be given all the details this week and it will be written in their planners. We will also include photographs of the children reading in extreme places – previously we have had photos of them reading on an elephant, a shed roof and even in a hot tub, so be as imaginative as you can!

Library books may be changed every Friday, so please encourage your children to return any completed books and exchange them for new ones. Reading will continue to take place in a variety of forms: guided reading, where they will work in groups with a teacher or teaching assistant; follow-up tasks, where they will be required to complete an activity reflecting their learning; and a novel study, where children will create a project based upon their chosen book. For this reason, children will need to have a novel of their choice (of an appropriate level for them to read independently) in school at all times.

Further reminders:

  • P.E. lessons will take place on a Monday and Friday. However, it is advisable to retain kits in school in case of non-timetabled sessions.
  • Maths cards also need to be practised regularly at home and then brought in at least once a week to be tested. Testing will be carried out by myself, Mrs Watson or any willing parent volunteers!
  • Learning logs will continue to be given out on a Friday,  to be returned by the following Wednesday. Homework also includes at least one hour of reading that must be signed off by an adult.
  • Spelling and tables tests will take place on a Friday afternoon.

Please feel free to come in and see me before or after school with any questions or concerns. Thank you again for your continued support. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2014.

Yours sincerely,

Lisa Caro
