Year 2 — 05 January 2015

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break and are feeling ready for 2015!

This term, in Year 2, there are lots of exciting topics to look forward to.

In Computing our focus is ‘Starting Research’ linked to our History topic ‘The Great Fire of London’. The children will pose their own questions about the event, learn how to find answers to them using both non-fiction books and the internet, and finally, how to present their findings effectively through their writing. We will be placing web links on the Year 2 web page that we will be using in school, but these will also be accessible from home if the children wish to look at them further. During this term there will also be a strong focus on using the internet safely.

In other subjects we will be looking at:
            English:           ‘Stories in Familiar Settings’

Science:            ‘Forces and Movement’ and ‘Electricity’
            Geography :    ‘Chennai : A contrasting locality’
R.E. :                  ‘Special Places’ and ‘Easter’
            Art:                    ‘Textiles – Weaving’
            D & T:                 ‘Junk Vehicles’
P.E. :                   ‘Gymnastics’ and ‘Indoor Athletics’
Music:  ‘Exploring pitch’, ‘What’s The Score’ and ‘Indian Music’.

In addition to these, we will continue with daily phonics sessions through our Read, Write Inc. scheme. Spellings will be set on a Friday based on the sounds taught that week and tested the following Friday as in the Autumn term. Please ensure the children have their spelling books in school to enable this to happen smoothly.

Some weekly reminders:
P.E. takes place on Monday and Thursday afternoons although it is helpful if the children have kits in school throughout the week in case we need to reschedule.

Reading books are changed on Mondays and Fridays if their reading records have been signed. Without a signature, we will assume the reading book has not yet been finished so if your child has completed their book, please make a note and we will be happy to change it. Please also ensure reading books are in school throughout the week so reading opportunities are not missed.

Maths cards will still be tested on a weekly basis. These are an excellent way of assisting your child with acquiring basic mental maths skills, the impact of which is clearly evident in daily maths lessons. Your continued support with these is much appreciated. We will endeavour to test maths cards on Tuesday afternoons but are fairly reliant upon parent helpers to complete these in a timely manner. If you are able to volunteer some time to help us with testing, this would be very welcome.

Show & Tell sessions take place on Friday afternoons on a rota system. Please check the list in the classroom window!

We are not anticipating any school trips for this term in Year 2 but should anything arise, I will provide plenty of warning and any details as they become available.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Miss Lewis to the Year 2 team! I know she is looking forward to meeting you all.

I’m sure we will have a busy, productive and successful Spring term but if you have any questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Harvey
