Year 1 Summer Term Letter

17th  April 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you have had a relaxing and enjoyable break. This term Year 1 will be covering a wide range of new and interesting topics.

This term in Science we will be focusing on growing plants. We will be looking at different plants within the local environment, naming the main parts and recording careful observations of our own planted seedlings. We will link this to our Art topic of ‘Observational drawing’. In Geography we will be learning about ‘Our Local Area’, History will be ‘St. Alban’ and ‘Our Families’ and D&T will be ‘Moving Pictures’.

St. Alban will also be the topic of our class assembly which is on Friday 18th May at 9.15.

In Maths during the first half term we will be focussing on capacity, data, number and fractions as well as addition and subtraction facts and we will also be looking at problem solving and sorting. In order for you to be able to support your child at home we will continue to send home maths challenge cards.

During our English lessons this term we will be starting with reading non-fiction texts, writing our own information books, followed by Traditional Tales and. In addition to English lessons we will continue to participate in daily ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ Lessons. This continues to enhance the children’s knowledge and understanding of phonics, and prepare them for the National Phonics Screening Test in June. There will be additional communication regarding this in due course.

To enhance and enrich the curriculum we will be arranging two school outings this term. One is the trip to the cathedral on the 30th of April and another to Paradise Wildlife Park. We will let you know more information as soon as the details are finalised.

Thank you to all the parents/carers that help with reading and maths cards. It is much appreciated. However, we would really love more volunteers to read with the children. This can be any afternoon at anytime!

We are hoping to have a very happy and productive summer term! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Harvey and Mrs Fox
