Welcome to Year R!

We hope you have had time to relax over the summer. Reception is a very important year being the first your child has in School. To make the experience as enjoyable as possible we will be covering a variety of fun and interesting topics.

This term Year R’s topic will be ‘Our Favourite Books’. We will explore a range of our favourite books and where we can find them. We will be looking at the structure of books and the different themes which arise in the books the children share. We will also be focusing on getting to know the school, our likes and dislikes and the importance of numbers and letters.

During the first half of term we will be performing baseline assessments looking at each child’s
skills and stage of development. This will ensure we can provide the best learning experience for each child individually. These assessments will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage’s seven areas of learning (click here for more information).

P.E. lessons will take place on a Monday and Friday however it is advisable to keep kits in school at all times.

In week four we will start to encourage your child to take home a reading book. As we will still be assessing the children, we will start the term with reading books that do not have any words. Reading books without text encourages your child to use describing words and develop their imaginative story telling skills. Your child will be heard reading regularly and reading books will be changed on Monday and Friday– nonetheless please make sure that they are returned to school every day in their book bag. Please can you sign their reading record book when your child has read their book to you at home. We do not change the books unless this is done.

We hope your children have a happy time in Reception. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us. We are looking forward to getting to know all of you and your children.

See you soon!
