Welcome to Year 5

September 2013

Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome you and your child to Year 5 and hope that you had a wonderful summer holiday. This letter will hopefully clarify some of your questions about curriculum coverage and classroom routines this year.

The Year 5 curriculum is broad and balanced, with plenty of scope for practical work, investigations, individual, paired and group work.  We will also incorporate trips to enhance and compliment learning.  We begin with our visit to Hazard Alley on Wednesday, 11th September.

In Literacy this term, we will be exploring aspects of story writing, as well as reading, writing and enjoying a range of poetry. Following this, we will be reading and performing plays of known texts. Our non-fiction focus will be on instructions, note taking and recount texts, relating to other curriculum areas.

During Maths we will continue to build on prior learning from Year 4, developing skills in understanding number, calculating, shape, measuring and handling data.  There will be a compulsory maths homework set each week in addition to the learning log homework.

Our topics in Science this term will be Forces and Earth and Space.  In ICT we will be learning about data bases. Our History topic will be the War of the Roses. You may wish to begin your own research on this exciting period in history (this period in time may be more relevant to you than you think!).  Art will concentrate on Shades, Tones and Tints. After half term, our Design Technology food unit will involve an ‘Apprentice style’ challenge to create your own box of chocolates.  In RE we will be studying rules for living and aspects of Hanukah and Christmas.

As well as swimming on Wednesdays in the Autumn term, (to begin on the 18th September for 10 weeks at a cost of £16.00)  the children will have a weekly PE session on Monday afternoons.  This will include rugby and dance this term.  Please could children have named PE kits in school at all times and ensure that they have appropriate outdoor footwear and clothing also for the colder weather.  French will now be on a Tuesday morning with Mrs Cohen who will be teaching Year 5 for the whole day.

As the children are now in the Upper Juniors, it is important that they become responsible for remembering to bring their homework in on the correct day. The Learning Log tasks will be given out on a Friday and should be returned the following Wednesday.  The school provides writing pens, however, should your child wish to bring their own please ensure it is a pen with blue ink.

Any parental help would be greatly appreciated. We would particularly welcome help when walking the class to and from Sandringham School for swimming on a Wednesday. If you are able to help in any way, please come and see me.

It would be useful if parents are able to attend our Parent Presentation Evening on Tuesday 17th September at 7.30pm, as we will be introducing and informing parents about our new initiatives, including the introduction of our new spelling scheme.

Our Consultation Evenings will take place on Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st November, 4.00-7.00pm.

I hope that your child will be very happy in Year 5. I would like to thank you for your help and support in advance and if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Heidi Lewis (Year 5 Class teacher) and Mrs Sarah Illingworth (Year 5 Teaching Assistant)
