Year 1 — 03 September 2015

3rd September 2015

Dear Parents/ Carers,

We hope you have had a lovely summer and enjoyed some good weather. Year 1 is a very exciting year in which we will be covering a wide range of new and interesting topics. This term our topic is the ‘Seasons and Weather’, which we will be revisiting as the seasons and weather change throughout the year and we will be starting with looking at the ways that we can measure and record the weather and the change in the seasons from Summer to Autumn. We would also request any spare seasonal clothing you may have for our role play area (e.g. scarf, coats, umbrellas, wellies etc.). Any donations would be greatly appreciated!

In English this term we will be reading stories with familiar settings, learning about labels, lists and captions as well as non-fiction books. In addition to English all children in Key Stage 1 will continue to participate in the daily ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ scheme. Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and Friday, each child will take two reading books home, accompanied by their reading record in which you write the title of the book they have completed and any comments. In addition to the reading scheme books your child will have a library book which they will change with parent helpers on a weekly basis.

In Maths during the first half term we will be starting with number recognition, addition and subtraction facts and we will then be moving on to shape. In order for you to be able to support your child at home we will be sending home maths challenge cards.

In Computing the children will be exploring a range of packages in ‘Let’s Create’ and in Art we will be having fun with ‘Squiggles, Splats, Spots and Swirls’. In RE we will be learning about ‘Thanking God for Nature’. Our first Science topic will be ‘Materials’. The children will also have Miss Yaxley for Music and Mrs Nichol for Dance on a Wednesday.

P.E. lessons will take place on a Wednesday and Friday, however, it is advisable to keep P.E kits in school at all times in case of non timetabled sessions. Show and tell will be on a rota basis on a Thursday; this is an opportunity for the children to share something interesting with their friends.

Parent helpers are hugely appreciated and very welcome to come and help with the library, reading and maths cards. If you are able to help, please come and discuss days and times with us.

We hope your children have a fabulous time in Year 1 and if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to us.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Harvey and Mrs Jane Fox
