Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 4

Welcome back to a new term in Year 4!

I hope you have all had a wonderful time over Christmas and that you have had a fantastic start to 2013 so far.   I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Year 4 children and parents for my lovely Chrsitmas cards and presents.  You have been very kind and generous.

We have an exciting Spring Term ahead of us, with lots of new topics to begin and I am delighted to inform you that Mr David Boxer, a GTP student, will be working alongside me in Year 4 for the first few weeks of term.

Mr Bolton will continue to work with the children every Monday afternoon, teaching Music and also a new topic in Science called ‘Circuits and Conductors’.

The children will also learn to identify materials that are good thermal conductors and insulators in their other Science topic, ‘Keeping Warm’.

Our Geography unit in the Spring Term is a study of a Contrasting Locality and we have chosen to learn about India which will enable us to build on our Global Partnership with the school in Chennai.  Linked to this work, our Art topic will focus on Indian Art and more specifically, Rangoli patterns.

In RE, we will continue to compare Christianity with Sikhism and Hinduism.  To support this learning, we intend to visit the Hitchin Gurdwara (Sikh temple) on Tuesday 19th March.  This always proves to be a fascinating experience for the children and really helps to bring their learning alive.

We will work on several different units of PE over the course of the term including Gymnastics, Invasion Games and Indoor Athletics.

Our Design and Technology topic is Money Containers, with the children designing and making their own product by the end of the unit.  As part of their learning, Year 4 will need to look at a wide range of wallets and purses, so if you have any examples at home that you could spare for a few weeks, it would be great to have a selection in school.

Lastly, the children will be ‘Bringing Images to Life’ in ICT this term.  Over the course of the unit, Year 4 will learn to capture and edit digital images and to use these images to produce short animations.

As you will be aware, there is a Parents Evening in March which will provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress.  However, if any issues should arise in the meantime, either socially or academically, please do not hesitate to come in and see me.

As always, any parents who can spare a hour or so to help in the classroom are greatly appreciated so please let me know if you are interested.

I look forward to another busy and exciting term!

Miss Stevens
