Summer Term Letter Year 1

Dear Parents/ Carers,

I hope you have all had a wonderful Easter break and had lots of delicious chocolate! Most of the children have had a Read, Write, Inc assessment and have done a phonics past paper since they have come back. I would like to thank everyone who has been practising the sounds, alien words and real words with their children during the Easter holidays – you can really tell! They have been super!

In English this half term, we will be focusing on traditional fairytales. We will be looking at the characters, settings and re telling these. In the second half term, we will be focusing on non-chronological reports, poetry and vocabulary. In addition to English, all children will be staying in their year groups for our ‘Read, Write, Inc’ session this term. This is due to Year 2 focusing on their SATs and Year 1 focusing on our Phonics ready for the Phonics Screening. We will still be incorporating the ‘Read, Write, Inc’ skills into these sessions. Reading books will continue to be changed on a Tuesday and Friday and library books will still be changed on a Monday.  Show and Tell will continue to be on a rota basis on a Friday (please see the new summer list in the classroom window).

In Maths, we will be working on multiplication and division in the first half term. In the second half term we will be working on fractions and time and making sure everything has been covered. In order for you to be able to support your child at home we will continue to send home Maths Challenge Cards which will tested on Thursdays.

In Science, we will be observing the germination of our broad beans in our glass jars and learning the names for some parts of the plant.

In Geography, they will be investigating the local area, they will be doing a local walk and posting their very own letters.

In History, we will be learning about families and about old vs new. The highlight of this unit will be a visit to British School Museum where the children get to experience life as a Victorian child! The trip date is to be confirmed soon, so further details and permission slips to follow. However, I can confirm that it will be in the second half term after the Phonics Screening. Parent volunteers to accompany us are needed so if you are able to help please speak to myself or Mrs. Fox.

In their computing topic they will be continuing to work on graphs and purple mash – which they love!

In Art we will be learning about Aboriginal art and we will be making our own pots and dot pictures, this is because last term we did observational Art instead so they have been swapped around.

For this term P.E. lessons remain on a Thursday and Friday, however, it is advisable to retain kits in school at all times in case of non timetabled sessions.

We hope your children continue to have a wonderful and fun time in Year 1. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to speak to myself or Mrs Fox.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Upton and Mrs Fox
