Summer Term in Year 3

Welcome back to the Summer Term in Year 3 and I hope you all had a really lovely break over the Easter holidays.

This term we will be starting many exciting new topics and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you a bit more information about some of them.

In English, we will be studying a variety of genres beginning with a unit on Instructional Texts.  Following on from that, we will be learning about Performance Poetry, Adventure Stories, Authors and also Letters.

One of the Science topics we will be studying is ‘Light’.  This focuses on how light is reflected from some surfaces and also how the size and shape of shadows can change.  Fingers crossed for some sunshine to help us with this work!

In PE, we will continue with our Gymnastics lessons as well as starting Swimming lessons at Sandringham each week.  We will also spend time on an Athletics unit before moving on to Striking and Fielding games.

Our Geography topic for the Summer Term is Rivers, which will enable the children to identify the different features of a river and to know about how rivers impact their surrounding areas.  The children will also learn basic map skills while extending their place knowledge beyond the local area.

The Computing unit for the summer term is ‘Turtles and Games’.  This unit involves learning how to write instructions for Beebots and Logo, as well as how to program using Scratch.  It also includes studying a variety of simulations and understanding why these might be used.

For the remainder of the year, Miss Bird will be teaching Year 3 each week on a Tuesday.  Over the course of the term, this will include learning about different elements of grammar in English and some investigation work in Maths.  Miss Bird will also be teaching a Science unit on plants which will have strong links to our Art topic on observational drawing.

I am very much looking forward to what I am sure will be another exciting and productive term!  I hope you will be able to join us for our Class Assembly when we will be able to share some of our learning with you.  The Year 3 Assembly will be on Friday 20th June at 9.15am.

If you have any questions or concerns at all, please feel free to come and see me.    As always, any parents who are able to spare an hour or so each week to help in the classroom would be very much appreciated!

Miss Caroline Stevens
