At our house we have been enjoying watching the BBC Young Musician Competition Highlights programmes during the lockdown and I would really recommend checking them out on iPlayer. 25 young musicians were grouped into strings, percussion, piano, woodwind and brass finals and a winner chosen from each to play in the next round which will be in the autumn. The competition happens every two years and I have chosen a performance by the 2016 winner, Sheku Kanneh-Mason for my Piece of the Week this week. This recording is of Sheku playing one of my favourite pieces for one performer – Bach’s Cello Suite no.1 in G major:

Sheku’s performance in the competition in 2016 is here:

In this series of Piece of the Week, I will increase the number of performers each time. We have started with one performer playing a solo. Next week I’ll be suggesting a piece performed by two people – do you know what that’s called?
