Children from Years 5 and 6 at Skyswood Primary School performed superbly at the end of the summer term, bringing the musical ‘Oliver’ to life with their wonderful routines and acting talents. The performances were highly polished and thrilled the packed audiences at the Sandpit Theatre, Sandringham. Eva and Ewen both gave outstanding performances as OLiver, with a highlight being their wonderful ‘Where is Love?’ solos. The two mischievous Artful Dodgers, Oliver and Grace, really captured this central character throughout their performances, alongside the brilliant and scheming Fagins (Heather and Joel). Tom literally put fear into the audience on both nights with his powerful performances as Sykes, whilst his younger brother, Sam, was a most convincing Mr Bumble (accompanied by Maddie as a splendid Widow Corney.) Megan and Melissa were inspirational as Nancy, whilst Olivia and Katie were truly outstanding as Bet.
The performances began with a rousing routine of Food Glorious Food, and went from strength to strength as the workhouse boys and pickpockets lit up the stage with heir entertaining routines and humour. The market place and the Three Cripples bar were also brought to life through the dancing and confident acting from all children. This was by far the most ambitious production that the school have undertaken in recent years and I’m sure it will be an experience that the children, teachers and parents will fondly remember for many years to come. The school had to purchase the performing rights in order to stage the show as an ‘amateur production’ by arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals of New York. We thank Sandringham School, with particular thanks to Rachel and Olivia at the Sandpit Theatre, and to Ben Warren for his fantastic efforts in producing such high quality programmes!
