Happy Lunar New Year!

Reception have gone all out this year in learning about and celebrating the Lunar New Year as pat of our topic ‘Our Wonderful World’. The children have made Hong Bao (lucky red envelopes), painted Chinese dragon masks, made lanterns and also had a go at writing Chinese symbols to make Spring couplets (traditional banners used to decorate windows and doors during the festival)

We even made our own Chinese dragon which is hanging proudly from our classroom ceiling to celebrate 2024 – the Year of the Dragon!

After listening to the Zodiac story, we acted out the Great Race in our Small World area and found out more about the customs and traditions associated with this time of year. The children were especially taken with the Dragon and Lion dancing.

To finish our week, the children took part in the ‘Reception Chinese Restaurant’ experience, where we tasted a selection of Chinese food including egg fried rice, chicken balls, plain chow mein, spring rolls, prawn crackers, crispy seaweed and banana fritters! Some of the children really surprised themselves by liking foods they had never tasted before (even the seaweed!), but the prawn crackers and chicken balls were officially declared the favourites in a vote afterwards!

We would like to give a massive ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Wong for coming in to help us serve in our restaurant, and for also providing some fortunes cookies and lucky red envelopes for the children to take home with them. It truly was a very memorable week!
