Skyswood pupils excelled at the recent District Sports Athletics events at Westminster Lodge, winning the Boys Overall trophy along with the Boys Relay. Michael (Year 6) became the first Skyswood child in recent years to win a field event double, winning the high jump by clearing a height of 1.34 metres along with winning the long jump. Kaela came fourth in the Girls Throw and both relay teams came through their heats to qualify for the finals.
On the track, Olivia and Toby both scored valuable points by reaching the Year 3 final, with Harry coming second in the Year 4 final. Michael won the Year 6 sprint, with Matthew finishing third. Martha also ran superbly in the Girls 600 metres race, finishing runner-up, whilst the lower junior boys also reached the final of the shuttle run.
A highlight of the event was undoubtedly the Boys 4 x 100 metres relay. George set off at an amazing pace and, after a perfect hand-over to Matthew, Skyswood took a clear lead. Matthew then extended the lead before another immaculate hand-over to Jaiden, who raced around the bend and extended the lead even further. A third excellent hand-over gave Michael a clear lead. Having already won the individual sprint, Michael completed an outstanding relay run by the four boys to win by an incredible distance.
All of the children who represented Skyswood ran, jumped or threw to the very best of their ability and encouraged each other throughout. Well done to all of the team, it was an excellent team performance.
