Author of the Term- Cressida Cowell

This term we originally chose two authors (one for infants/reception and one for juniors), but our School Council Author of the Term Committee (Joshua, Nicholas and Rose) felt that both authors would appeal across all key stages, so we’ve given you a choice!

Create a Dragon competition:

Cressida Cowell is probably best known for her book ‘How to Train your Dragon.’ She actually wrote several books based on dragons. For example; How to Break a Dragon’s Heart, How to Steal a Dragon’s Sword, How to Seize a Dragon’s Jewel, How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury and How to Twist a Dragon’s Tale. Our artistic challenge is to create your own dragon. This could be a painting, a collage, a model, or even a puppet. You might use junk materials to make your dragon, or it could simply be a beautiful drawing.

Use your imagination and remember to give your dragon a name. We are looking for originality. It’s a good idea to look at lots of dragon pictures or books to give you some ideas, but make sure that you then create your very own dragon. How can you make your dragon a little different from everybody else’s? How might your picture or model give clues about your dragon’s character? Is it a friendly dragon?

Story Writing Competition

Using the ‘How to Train your Dragon’ idea, write a story of around 500 words for training a different fantasy creature or character. For example…

How to train Your Giant

How to train your Wizard,

How to train your Pixie,

How to train your Tooth Fairy

How to train your Mermaid

How to train your Troll

You could use any of these examples, or you could choose a different fantasy creature or character
