Year 2 Welcome Letter

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful and enjoyable summer break and are feeling ready to start a new school year. I am particularly excited about teaching in Year 2 and am really looking forward to working with your children again!

The Autumn Term is going to be a busy one as we begin a variety of interesting topics. In Literacy we will be reading and writing about stories in familiar settings. In addition to Literacy lessons, the children will continue with daily sessions of Read, Write, Inc. to progress their phonic knowledge, which in turn will further develop their skills in reading and writing. In the ‘Year 2 Welcome Pack’ issued at the end of last term, you will have seen a copy of the alphabet in cursive style. Over the next few weeks, I will be teaching this style of letter formation in focused handwriting sessions to enable the children to begin to join their writing. Over the course of the year, the children will be encouraged to adopt and practise this alternative style in order to increase their writing speed.

Reading books will be changed on a Monday but should further books be needed, they will be changed as requested. It is hoped that children will be heard reading at home on a daily basis. We will also endeavour to hear your children read frequently, so please ensure your child brings their book bag into school every day.

In Maths we will be focusing on counting, partitioning and calculating. We will continue to use maths challenge cards as homework to supplement and support their learning in school.

In Science, the children will study two topics this term: ‘Health and Growth’ and ‘Materials’. In History we will be looking at the work of Florence Nightingale. A ‘History off the Page’ visiting group has been booked towards the end of October to enhance and enrich this topic. Further details will follow, however the approximate cost for this is expected to be £10.00. Careful consideration is given to all visits and visitors to ensure that the children will obtain maximum benefit from them prior to booking.

P.E. will usually take place on Mondays and Thursdays but it will be necessary for the children to have a named kit in school all week in case we need to reschedule. In Music sessions on a Monday, the children will begin learning to play the recorder with Mrs Bird. They will therefore need to have their recorders and music folders with them on this day each week (further details will follow).

Helping me to teach your children this year will be Mrs Ivory, who will take the class on a Monday while I take my NQT and PPA time, and Miss Yaxley who will provide teaching support every morning and Tuesday afternoon. We hope your children will have a happy and productive time in Year 2 but if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact of us.

We look forward to a fun and successful year!

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Jenny Kerr (Year 2 class teacher), Mrs Lucy Ivory (support teacher) and Miss Lottie Yaxley (Year 2 teaching assistant)
