Spring Term in Year 4

  January 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to start by wishing you all a Happy New Year! I hope that you and your families all enjoyed a lovely Christmas break! I’d like take this opportunity to thank you all for the good wishes, lovely cards and gifts you gave to Mrs Ahmed, Miss Norton and myself, we were really touched by your thoughtfulness and generosity.

With the New Year comes a new topic; our topic this term will be based on the Anglo Saxons and Vikings; the children will have the opportunity to travel back in time to find out about these invaders, the way they lived and the impact they had on Britain. The topic will include opportunities for teacher led and independent research with plenty of scope for both individual and collaborative activities.

Other areas of study this term will include ‘Sound’ and ‘Electricity’ in Science, ‘Bringing Images to Life’ in ICT, which will involve editing images and using animation software, and exploring the use of clay modelling and papier mache in Art/DT. On Wednesdays, Music with Mrs Salway will continue and French with Mrs Cheshire where the children will be learning time, numbers to 60 and weather. In PE, we will begin the term with indoor cricket on a Tuesday and dance on a Wednesday, both of which will be indoors so no outdoor kit wll be needed until after the Easter holidays.

As with the last term, the ‘Learning Log’ tasks will be given out on a Friday and will be due in the following Wednesday and compulsory tasks must be completed.

The spelling scheme will continue with the children generating their own spellings on a Monday and being tested on the Friday of the same week. Please support your child to practise their spellings and times tables on a weekly basis, as well as reading at home regularly. Please also encourage your child to record each reading session in their school planner as the ‘50 night read’ competition is running again this term and this way all reading at home can be included in their tally.

As always, any parental help in assisting with times tables and reading would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to those who have offered your time since September! Ideally, this would take place first thing (between 9am and 10am) but I do appreciate that people are busy and will be grateful for any offer of assistance.

There are parents’ consultation evenings scheduled later on in the term and plans for our Viking day. Details of both will follow shortly. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact myself or Mrs Ahmed.

Kind regards,

Miss McAlister
